8. Francisco Tarrega (1852-1909). Malaguena. 2’31’’
The way of dancing fandango varied regionally and malaguena is seen as a variety of fandango. Today malaguena is no longer danced to, it is a so-called canto libro (free song). Tarrega was a native of Valencia but he took a great interest also in Andalusian culture. This interest is not generally reflected in his music as his best-known guitar pieces are very classical in style. But Tarrega’s Malaguena is an exception in this respect and here we can hear the rhythm that is so characteristic of fandango; the central part of the composition is a song.
